Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) is an international,
ecumenical aid organisation working in the areas
of development co-operation, emergency relief,
fund-raising and peace initiatives in different
corners of the world. Its sole motive -- action
to alleviate oppression and human suffering.
It was established after the Second World War
to provide support to war-affected Europeans.
NCA was mainly known as an emergency relief organisation
till the mid-1970s. Today however, its activities
cover a broad spectrum. Saving lives, promoting
human dignity, exposing and confronting human
oppression are its major goals.
Funds raised by the NCA are allocated to the
following areas:
- Emergency and refugee assistance
- Comprehensive development
- Peace and human rights-related work
- Poverty, especially gathering information
related to its political and economic causes
- Forging cross-cultural contacts between people
and organisations of the north and the south
- Promoting responsible management of natural
resources as a basis for sustainable development
Working mainly for marginalised people, NCA endeavours
to save human lives, promote human dignity, and
expose and confront oppression. However, NCA believes
that it alone cannot 'save' the world. Rather, the
marginalised people themselves must fight the battle
against oppression, poverty and injustice. NCA provides
all the necessary support.
NCA is affiliated to the World Council of Churches
and the Lutheran World Federation.

Finances for NCA projects are raised from private
contributions from thousands of individuals and
the Norwegian government.
|
NCA provides assistance regardless of race, nationality,
political affiliation or religion.
NCA achieves its various objectives through mutual
co-operation with churches, organisations, and other
institutions in the poor and rich countries of the
world. The areas that NCA is involved in are Africa,
Asia, Latin America and Europe. |

In India and Bangladesh, it supports church organisations
that carry out extensive development work in rural
areas, especially targeted towards women.
Historically, NCA has been occupied with disaster
response, and in recent times with disaster preparedness.
NCA has played a key role in setting up Relief
Stocking projects in Bangladesh and India. These
projects have been very helpful in local disaster
preparedness, initiating a quick response to major
disasters as well as severe local disasters that
may not warrant international appeal.
In post 2001 quake hit Gujarat, NCA supported
its partner organizations for timely relief and
rehabilitation intervention. In addition, NCA
along with Christian Medical Association of India
(CMAI), trained local volunteers in psycho-social
rehabilitation for quake survivors. NCA also has
plans to draw up training modules for psycho-social
intervention.
In Afghanistan, NCA is working to strengthen
the peace-building capacities of Afghan relief
workers and their partner organisations. NCA has
a joint programme 'Safe Housing' with UNHCR, aimed
at protecting Afghan political refugees.
